The Healing Benefits of Alfalfa

Alfalfa is an herb with a variety of healing properties and medicinal uses. The leaves of this plant, also known as Chilean Clover or Buffalo Grass, are an extremely mineral rich food source. Alfalfa is a “super food” containing calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium in addition to a multitude of vitamins.

Alfalfa is used to alkalize and purify the body. It is anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and anti-fungal.

Nutritious alfalfa sprouts are often eaten on salads, but it's the leaves and seeds that are the most valued for medicinal purposes. Historically, alfalfa was revered as an excellent food source for cattle and horses in various places throughout the world. Alfalfa was used in both ancient Chinese and Indian cultures to treat ulcers and other digestive disorders.

Today, studies have shown other important healing benefits of Alfalfa listed below.

Cancer

Alfalfa has been shown to help neutralize carcinogenic substances in the intestines. According to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute , alfalfa binds carcinogens and helps speed their elimination through the colon.

Women's Health Issues

Alfalfa seeds contain stachydrine and homostachydrine two chemicals known to produce menstruation. Alfalfa is reputed to be helpful during menopause, making side effects like hot flashes and hormonal imbalances more bearable.

Heart Disease & Stroke

Alfalfa leaves were shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels and reduce plaque deposits on artery walls, the two highest risk factors for developing heart disease and stroke. For this reason, alfalfa in the diet or through supplement is useful as a preventative measure.

Halitosis (chronic bad breath)

Although chronic bad breath is typically a symptom of larger problems that should be addressed, alfalfa can play a role in boosting health and reducing bad breath. The chlorophyll found in alfalfa is the active ingredient in many commercial breath fresheners. By eating alfalfa you also gain the added benefits of consuming a very nutritious food loaded with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

Smart Use Suggestions

Alfalfa sprouts should be as fresh as possible to glean the full nutritional benefits.

Fresh alfalfa leaves can be brewed into a tea to aid cholesterol levels. 1-2 teaspoons steeped in boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Enjoy up to 3 cups per day. It is recommended to not eat alfalfa seeds directly because they can be toxic in high doses and lead to blood disorders. Women who are pregnant and nursing are also advised to avoid Alfalfa as a safety precaution due to its mild estrogenic effects.
