Tarot & Astrology – Which Tarot Card Are You? Can You Guess?

In the Tarot, the various court cards are associated with the astrological signs. When doing a reading, knowing the basic elements of a sign and its corresponding card can give you some insight into the personality traits of the people who appear in readings. It can also lend great insight into the personality characteristics your client should adopt (or avoid) depending on his/her situation. A card specifically chosen to represent a querrent is called a significator – and may or may not be one of the astrological cards.

I will say I don’t personally place a lot of importance on Astrology as it pertains to Tarot. I believe there are a lot of factors that determine our personalities, what we become, and how we think, believe, and act. Do I believe there is some influence? Yes, because I am very definitely a Scorpio in many ways. I also know many people who tend to live up to the characteristics of their sun signs, but I also know many others who really don’t. Do I believe we should use someone’s sun sign to ultimately decide if we are compatible? No. We are all individuals and should be judged on individual merits – not the general sun sign we were born under. Detailed astrology charts based on place, date, and time of birth are another story and do tend to lend very strong insight and can be quite uncanny - but general “sun sign” is way too broad. Many more astrological elements like the rising sign have to also be considered and that is where Tarot falls short from an Astrological perspective.

That being said, I believe the astrological associations with the cards are good at giving general pictures and ideas about a person. They are not always literal. For example, someone who shows up with the Queen of Wands card as a significator, may or may not have the associated birth sign as their own, but may demonstrate the dominant characteristics that correspond with it. He/she may love to be the center of attention and be very outgoing and charismatic, but their actual birth sign could be something completely different – and usually is.

Page of Wands: Page of Wands people tend to be very outspoken and outgoing and very “to the point” in their manner of speaking. They aren’t shy and they don’t beat around the bush. They tend to be very progressive thinkers, philosophical and love a good debate be it in politics or just in general. They are very passionate, sensual, and interesting people who are open to new experiences. They don’t often take criticism well and they tend to dominate conversations.

Queen of Wands: Queen of Wands people are very generous and affectionate. They have a flare for drama and love to be the center of attention (just ask both my sons lol). They are very creative souls who love music, entertaining, and otherwise sharing their creativity and talent with others. These are people who tend to be somewhat impulsive and can even be daredevils at times. They tend to be very passionate and although they love others they also love themselves – which can make them come across to others as being a bit aloof or ego-centric. Queen of Wands people love to be in control and love to win – they are very competitive.

King of Wands: This card represents someone enterprising and strong willed who tends to be very energetic and confident. The King of Wands person can be quick to anger, but is also usually just as quick to get over it and move on. This person loves to plan and develop, and build ideas and strategies. They work well alone and are very motivated and assertive. They can work well with others, but do have a strong independent streak and prefer to do things their own way.

Page of Cups: This card represents someone who is very centered on the emotional plane, deeply sensitive and emotional, but also prone to feeling overwhelmed and being hypersensitive. This card comes up a lot around those who are psychic or highly intuitive. They are drawn to the arts and to careers where their creativity and emotions can flow freely. This person is great at finishing projects and helping others follow through on their own visions. The Page of Cups is romantic, highly imaginative, and sometimes a bit “flaky” or “scatterbrained” in the eyes of others, but very loving and sensitive.

Queen of Cups: This card represents those who are deeply spiritual, the “seekers” of the world who are drawn to the mysterious and even darker sides of human thought/emotion. Queen of Cups people are very magnetic, intuitive, and sensual people with an intensity about them that makes others see them as mysterious and interesting. The Queen of Cups person has an excellent discerning ability that can be off putting to others because he/she can see through ulterior motives and falsehoods straight into the heart of the matter. People with this sign/card tend to show a cool, collected picture to others, but tend to take things very personally and you will always know when you’ve angered a person of this sign because they can be quite mean-spirited when provoked.

King of Cups: This King is very deeply feeling and intuitive, his emotions can get the better of him and when worried he is apt to become quite cranky. Mood swings are typically frequent, but short-lived. The King of Cups person tends to be very focused on home life and that is takes priority over career, socializing etc. This person typically plays a strong supportive role in career areas and is the glue that holds everything together. King of Cups people are sometimes worriers, but they don’t let that stop them from finding solutions or thinking in new ways when needed. King of Cups people are very loyal to their inner circle and are often first to volunteer when someone is in trouble.

Page of Swords: The Page of Swords people are your “realists” who are very down to earth and pragmatic. They tend to be people who need to see concrete results and are more “by the rules” people who can get the job done. They are very practical and resourceful which can make up for their sometimes seeming lack of imagination. They tend to be very good at finishing what they start and will persevere where others may give up. Their patience and determination often lead them to be quite successful over time because they don’t take “no” for an answer – in a good way!

Queen of Swords: The Queen of Swords person is very “matter of fact” and objective. These are analytical people who tend to love science and discovery. They are very discerning and extremely intelligent. Logic and analysis fascinate them and they love to learn and explore issues in great detail. Personally they tend to come across as more serious in nature and are very independent. They are all about “functional” and “practical” – more than aesthetics.

King of Swords: This is a person who is fair-minded, well-balanced and a good judge of character. Compassionate leadership that considers all sides of a story before taking action. This is the card of law enforcement, military, a strong sense of duty and service to others, coupled with discipline and a strong work ethic. Sometimes this person comes across as indecisive due to their need to carefully consider all facets of a subject before making a choice. Careful deliberation and consideration of others is considered in all they do. They love decorum and beautiful surroundings and are sometimes prone to a touch of vanity.

Page of Pentacles: Page of Coins represents someone who is very productive and ambitious. These are people who are very motivated by career and who are very practical and responsible. The Page of Coins person often works his/her way into leadership positions and can be a bit of a “workaholic”, particularly if they struggle in their personal lives. This person loves to learn and reaching goals is imperative. When this person hits milestones in their career or education they strongly associate that with a strong sense of self. Personally the Page of Coins can be prone to bouts of depression or feeling that something is missing. They spend so much time “striving” for goals that they often lose a bit of “self” in the process which leads to these feelings.

Queen of Pentacles: The Queen of Pentacles represents an idealist who is opinionated and dedicated to their vision. They are inclined to teach or move the public at large, are very charitable and altruistic. They feel called to a higher vision and to serve the greater good. They are friendly, compassionate, and mostly optimistic although they tend to be greatly influenced by external influences and as such often feel “out of control” or like slaves to circumstance.

King of Pentacles: The King of Pentacles represents someone very competent and enterprising – a person with very high skills or considered gifted in his/her field. King of Coins people are very versatile and often have expansive knowledge or understanding of a variety of subjects. This person is very gifted with communication or teaching and is a natural multi-tasker. Driven by a need for personal success as well as career success, this person is always learning new things and will work tirelessly to prove him/herself

When you chose the card that you most resonated with chances are it wasn’t necessarily the one associated with your Astrological sun sign. The card you resonate with the most is the one that you should choose as your significator if you choose to use one.

Astrology is an interesting element to consider during a Tarot reading which can lend some secondary insights. It is certainly not the most important and I focus more on the stories of the cards themselves and how to tie the wisdom of those stories into my client’s situation via intuition and overall card knowledge. I believe ultimately it is our inner wisdom that guides us to the answers and lessons we seek, whether through Tarot or any other medium.
